Many Stories, One City is multimedia project to record and celebrate the diverse stories of Dearborn, Michigan. A suburb of Detroit, Dearborn is well-known for its large Arab American population and is the home of the Arab American National Museum. The diverse Arab American community has been a part of Dearborn for nearly a century, creating positive impacts on the city’s economy and cultural landscape. Despite many media depictions of Dearborn as a dangerous and entirely foreign enclave, non-Arab residents in Dearborn live peacefully side by side with their Arab American neighbors. This project aimed to help all Dearborners feel pride in their community and to demonstrate the invaluable contributions of diversity in the community.
Funded by a National Endowment for the Humanities Common Heritage grant, Many Stories, One City consisted of a series of events that invited Dearborn residents to learn more about the city's history, share their own stories and learn to preserve their family and community history. The Arab American National Museum worked with the Dearborn Historical Museum and Lebanese American Heritage Club to coordinate these events and reach multiple audiences.
This collection consists of photos, documents, and recordings from the following events:
